Meetings

Meetings are held the third Friday of the month except in the summer and December. Meetings are usually held at noon at the Toledo Club in downtown Toledo (14th and Madison streets). Luncheon meetings and professional development programs feature local, regional and national practitioners from a variety of backgrounds. This schedule is tentative and subject to change.

June 2008 Meeting

Our June meeting focused on green marketing and PR and featured panelists Ried Artis, business media relations representative at Owens Corning,; Andi Norman, director of marketing and public relations at the Toledo Zoo; and Helene Sheets, director of college relations at Lourdes College. The program's organizer and moderator was Scott Carpenter, APR, public relations manager for Metroparks of the Toledo area.

May 16th Meeting

Matt Logan, Director of Marketing and Product Management at Crown Equipment Corporation, led a discussion at the May meeting about how measurement tools can help align senior leadership regarding the strategic importance of public relations, increasing marketing public relations budgets and enhance the brand.

April 2008 Meeting

Todd Chris Rowland, Patrick Buescher and Amanda Matusak of Deskey, a leading brand strategy firm headquartered in Cincinnati, brought a presentation on generational branding to life through music, video and some very astute observations. Baby Boomers and members from Generations X and Y all were reminded of the importance of communicating messages in a way that is embraced by target audiences. Many thanks to Karen Fraker, APR and chapter ethics chair, for getting it organized for us.

April 20 , 2007 - Communicating in the New Web Paradigm

Bill Balderaz, President, Webbed Marketing discussed how bloggers can be more influential and harder to reach than editors. He also talked about the role news releases play in search engine strategy and how podcast interviews can be one of the most effective public relations tools available.

March 18, 2007 - The Similac Mom’s Alliance

Keri Butler, Manager of Public Affairs and Communications for Abbott’s Ross Products Division, speaks at the
March PRSA luncheon. Butler spoke to the group about the Similac Mom’s Alliance , a panel of mompersonalities,
each with her own unique take on the challenges of new motherhood while retaining a sense of self
and life balance — and giving her baby the strongest start in life. The intent of the Similac Moms Alliance is to
create on over-arching platform to deliver brand messages on a broad spectrum of products while connecting with
today’s moms in media relevant to their lives.

January 2007 - Advocacy in Public Relations Today

 

The Flogs, front groups and fake news.These are the buzzwords at the forefront of advocacy in public relations today. How do they apply here in Toledo? And what kind of issues will we be facing in 2007 and beyond? The January meeting featured Mike Cherenson, APR, vice president of The Cherenson Group in Livingston, New Jersey. Mike is chairman of the PRSA National Advocacy Advisory Board, a group that has been responsible for creating a new advocacy-monitoring presence within the organization and on the PRSA Web site.Mike discussed the advocacy efforts going on at the national level (including the organization’s new Northwest Ohio Chapter January 2007 leadership role in speaking out on issues). He also lead us in an issues-mapping session for identifying new issues locally and nationally. This was a very interesting topic for all of us and we were glad to see many of you there, including PRSSA members as you looktoward future careers in public relations.

November 2006 - Hall of Fame

The November Chapter Meeting featured Brad Horn, director of communications at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, New York.Brad discussed how he entered the world of sports public relations and the challenges facing the sports PR industry. The meeting was also PRSSA Day with a special student skills workshop following Brad’s presentation. Thank you to all professionals and students who attended in making the meeting a success!!



 

June 2006 - A PRSA Exclusive Zoo-To-Do

May 2006 -- Issue Management Today

Thanks to all who attended the April program, which provided an update on the practice of organizational issue management. Teresa Yancey Crane, Issue Action Publications, focused on trends and developments in the field; Jim Worden, Owens Corning, talked about day-to-day execution; and Mike Palese, DaimlerChrysler, discussed issue management and litigation. Thanks to all of those who were involved in this timely discussion!

March 2006 -- "St. Patrick's Day Meeting"

Attendance at the St. Patrick's Day meeting included six past presidents.
Mike Hart, an Irishman, spoke about strategy behind Hart Associates' successful campaign for Carty.
For the meeting March 17, Jeanette Drake, president, gave away a door prize to make up for the absence of green beverage at lunch.
Guests were every shade of green when BGSU PRSSA President Greg Kohlrieser won the Guinness door prize (after being appropriately carded).

Feb. 2006 -- "Meet the Media"

In February, the chapter held a special "Meet the Media" speed-dating meeting, where some 40 public relations professionals had the chance to get to know media from Toledo and beyond.
